MGZ 7

Chapter 7: The Girl Behind The Window

Ye Lian leapt towards the mutated zombie when she saw it fall to the ground. She pulled out its gel and ate it in one smooth motion.

With her current speed, she was able to extract gels from zombies without even spilling a single drop of blood on herself. She was so swift that a reddish white substance only started to slowly drip out the back of the mutated zombie’s head after she had let go of it.

The appearance of the mutated zombie’s gel had surprised Ling Mo. A regular zombie’s gel was slightly red, however the piece of gel from the mutated zombie was covered with red arteries. At first glance, it looked like a beautiful red gemstone.

After giving Ye Lian the command to wait, Ling Mo took the piece of gel from her and closely inspected it.

Ling Mo had previously guessed that this gel was probably the source of the infection. It was similar to calculus 1 which formed within the body, but only a little softer.

The source of the infection that formed within the zombie’s brain was likely what caused them to losing their sense of reasoning, reducing them to zombies.

Consuming the source of the infection was what enabled Ye Lian’s own virus to become even purer, while also gradually increasing the amount of influence it had. This was likely a case of fighting fire with fire…

After giving it a sniff, a light but pungent smell wafted to his nose. The smell made Ling Mo immediately furrow his brows. It was so strong that it almost made him faint. However this thing that no normal person would be able to bear, was in Ye Lian’s eyes a supreme delicacy.

The purity of this piece of gel was definitely much higher than that of a regular zombie’s. After thinking about the incident that happened the previous time, Ling Mo decided to wait till he had found a suitable place to rest before allowing Ye Lian to eat it. Otherwise if she fainted on the spot, even Ling Mo would be disabled. At that time any random regular zombie that passed by would be able to finish him off.

Ling Mo stepped over the zombie’s corpse and furrowed his brows as he walked into the workshop that was no different from a slaughterhouse. He left Ye Lian outside to obstruct any zombies that might be attracted by the smell of blood.

The floor looked like a layer of flesh had been pasted on it, and stepping on it felt very strange. A dense smell of rot lingered in the air that made one’s head hurt.

Thinking that one of these pieces of flesh or skeletons might have once been Wang Lin, Ling Mo couldn’t help but give the mutated zombie from before a hard stomp.

There were many pieces of finished and unfinished craft swords around the workshop, but they weren’t what Ling Mo was looking for. After searching the area for while, he found a box under half a piece of a bloodstained sleeve.

Inside the box were several daggers and a short saber 2 which exuded a cold aura. All of them had been given an edge and they were very sharp. Their quality was pretty good too, much better than those unwieldy vegetable knives. They were also convenient to carry.

After trying all of them out, Ling Mo selected the saber and hung it by his waist. He also chose another easy to use dagger and kept it on him. These two items would probably be able to offer some help on the journey towards the city…

Although Ye Lian was strong, but as they get closer to the city, the number of zombies they encountered would only continue to increase. Leaving all the fights to Ye Lian wasn’t a feasible idea.

Moreover because he was with Ye Lian, Ling Mo always harbored a faint hope in his heart. He hoped to be stronger than Ye Lian so she wouldn’t be the one struggling at death’s door. This way, when Ye Lian regained her humanity one day, he’d be able to hold his head up high and face her…

Ling Mo’s spiritual connection with Ye Lian allowed him to evolve alongside her. This gave him a chance to get stronger. But just evolving wasn’t good enough. As a mutated zombie, Ye Lian’s body was far stronger than Ling Mo’s. Ling Mo’s strength lay in his ability to learn and constantly refine his fighting techniques.

Ling Mo had indeed learned many things as he battled alongside Ye Lian these past few days. This could be seen from the way he handled the mutated zombie.

But that still wasn’t enough…Ling Mo walked out of the workshop and gazed at Ye Lian’s back with a complicated look on his face.

He’d already confirmed that there were other mutated zombies like Ye Lian out there. Just from looking at Ye Lian’s shocking rate of growth, Ling Mo dreaded that there might be zombies that were even stronger than that mutated zombie from before. This was especially so in the city where zombies were closely packed together. There were probably a number of mutated zombies there as well…no matter how you look at it, Ling Mo’s rate of growth just wasn’t fast enough.

“Let’s go.”

Seeing as he couldn’t find anything else of note within the workshop, Ling Mo took Ye Lian and left. Although Ye Lian was just following his commands, but in Ling Mo eyes, she was still the same spoilt girl that he remembered, making him unconsciously talk to her.

Unbeknownst to Ling Mo, while they were leaving, in a small two story building across the shop, a slim and delicate hand suddenly pulled open a heavy curtain. A pair of clear eyes watched Ling Mo and Ye Lian disappear at the intersection through a thin gap between the curtains.

“Wang Lin, what’s wrong?”

A man’s voice came from within the room as he asked suspiciously.

The girl who was called Wang Lin immediately let go of the curtains. She turned her head and looked at the somewhat dim interior. The outline of her face looked delicate, yet she wore an expressionless look on it. The dim rays of light that fell on her made her look even more frail, “The mutated zombie has been killed. The saber inside has been taken as well, and it was the best one.”

The man who had spoken walked out from the shadows and asked in surprise, “That can’t be! How’d they do it?”

“Direct confrontation.” Wang Lin had a complicated look on her face as she said, “Originally we thought that whatever the case was, that person was one of our relatives, so we had to think of an appropriate method to end his life. I never thought that there’d be someone who could take on a mutated zombie face to face…I took notice of them when they came. There was a girl that didn’t fight and another person that looked rather familiar, but I can’t remember who he was. He probably wasn’t anyone special…”

“That’s amazing! It’s too bad that all the plans that we’d painstakingly thought of have all gone to waste, and they even took it away.” The man had a very shocked expression on his face, but he looked even more depressed.

Wang Lin let out a grunt of dissatisfaction, “The important thing was that saber! That saber was hand made by me for my father. How could he have taken it! If it weren’t for that saber, I wouldn’t have come back here.”

After breaking out from his surprise, the man replied somewhat helplessly, “Since it’s been taken just forget about it…”

A flash of fury streaked across Wang Lin’s eyes as she said, “I refuse! I spent almost half a year before I managed to finish it. What basis does he have for taking it away! Let’s cut the crap and go after him!”

“Stop looking for trouble…”

“Why are you so timid! Either way I better not see him again, or else he’ll get what’s coming to him! I can’t believe he took my things, thief!”

“Yes, you’re right…” The man went along with her before carefully asking, “Since the saber was taken, what are we going to do now? Looks like we can only go to your older cousin’s place to take a look. At the same time we can check if any survivors there…”

Wang Lin had a look of disgust on her face as she muttered, “It’d be better if they were all dead!”

But after a moment of silence, she helplessly nodded her head and said, “There’s no choice, they’re family members who have inherited grandfather’s techniques, their knives aren’t bad either. Let’s go take a look. If it wasn’t for the fact that I only knew how to use knives, I wouldn’t even bother to go! Now that I think about it, that man really does look familiar…”

“In a small place like this the chances of us bumping into them again is high. No point thinking about it anymore for now. Let’s finish preparing early and head over to your cousin’s place.”

In contrast to Wang Lin’s cold indifference, the man looked extremely excited. Wang Lin gave a grunt in response to the man’s reaction, “I really hope they’re all dead! Especially that guy who took away my saber. I hope you die soon and get reincarnated!”

Ling Mo, who was heading towards his temporary safe house, suddenly felt his scalp go numb as he felt a chill run down his spine.

He quickly turned around but didn’t didn’t see anything, only a few corpses of zombies that he’d just cut down.

“What happened? Was it my imagination?”

Ling Mo looked around suspiciously before helplessly shaking his head. He turned and gave Ye Lian a look before hastily walking off.

  1. Thanks for the chapter, you sure are hard at work!

At first glance, it looked like a beautiful red precious stone.
Could replace precious stone with gemstone.

while also gradually the amount of influence it had.
    missing an adjective after gradually

Ling Mo’s strength lay in his ability to learn and constantly refine his fighting techniques.
    lie*

The part about her knife confused me. Her father made it, but she worked on it for half a year, and she’s going to her cousin in hopes of learning how to make knives?
In the other works, I dont recall her father being mentioned in the original works.

I assume her father helped her make it for 6months since she can’t make knives yet.

    1. Yep, I’m working really hard to grow the site haha
I’ll bullet point my reply to make it a little easier to differentiate.

Could replace precious stone with gemstone.
-The gemstone suggestion sounds good, I’ll add it in

      missing an adjective after gradually
-Will add in the missing adjective 🙂

The part about her knife confused me…
-@Easykiln already brought it up in the post below. This was more of an inaccuracy on the part of the raws which I directly translated (due to the failing functions of my brain after hours of translating) and I will be making an edit for that as well.

      lay vs lie*
-This gave me some pause. I think I had some trouble deciding on which word to use when I was translating as well. After you brought it up, I did some extensive research (a whole 5 minutes worth! D:) and found this link which was rather insightful.

      http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/187784/correct-use-of-lie-or-lay-in-the-following-context

Most notably Idea #3 in the first answer below the question. With that as a reference, I believe my version should be correct for my intended meaning. If you think differently, let me know and I’ll give it further thought.

      1. I’m not sure about the lie lay thing myself, not really a native speaker, so my corrections stem from, “Does this sound correct?” and don’t really have much thought behind them.

        1. Really? I’m surprised. Your English is really good for someone who isn’t a native speaker.

Well as a native speaker of English, “lay” does sound more correct and the article does back it up so I’ll stick with that.

You’re just in time too, chapter 8 is coming up!

  2. Not sure what calculus forming inside the body is supposed to be…

Wang Lin said she made the knife, so the previous line should be that it was made FOR her father, rather than by.

    1. The calculus part was even more confusing in the raw. Calculus refers to a medical condition where substances crystallise in the body. (I had to wiki that!) Guess I’ll put a note for clarity.

As for the Wang Lin part, what I wrote was according to the raws. I knew there was some incongruence, but I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. (after translating for a few hours your brain starts to go mush) Your interpretation should be right though. I’ll edit it later.

Thanks for the comments and interest as always 😀
