Chapter 6: Mutated Zombie

After overcoming his surprise, Ling Mo was filled with joy!

Since Ye Lian’s eyes had turned back to normal, his previous thoughts must have been on the right track! As the virus evolved, Ye Lian might be able to gradually restore her humanity…

But the speed of the virus’ evolution had been greatly reduced after her eyes had turned back to normal. Ye Lian only saw a small increase in strength after hunting more than a hundred zombies over a period of three days. The increase in mental strength that Ling Mo was hoping for didn’t  come about either.

A silver lining to all this was the changes in Ling Mo’s body. As his mental strength continued to increase, he experimented controlling Ye Lian and other zombies simultaneously. Surprisingly, after a few tries he managed to succeed! With continued practice, he’d become even more familiar with this technique.

In addition, his battle strength continued to improve as well. Although he wasn’t as agile as Ye Lian, but with his sense of reasoning, he was more adaptable in responding to various situations than her. He was now confident of being able to protect himself even if Ye Lian broke free from his control.

But at this moment, Ling Mo realized something that made him speechless. His reserves of food had run out…

Previously, his stamina consumption was low when he used Corpse Puppet to fight and scavenge for food. But since he started participating in battle, his use of stamina had noticeably increased, leading to him eating more.

This was originally part of the suburbs. When disaster broke out, much of the food in the area had already been claimed by looters. Afterwards, repeated searches conducted by the survivors lead to almost no food remaining.

Having no other choice, Ling Mo decided to bring Ye Lian to the city center after not finding anything in two small supermarkets.

Compared to this place which served as a transition point between the urban and rural area, the city center had an abundance of food remaining. But because of the large number of people that used to live there, the number of zombies there now was horrifyingly high in proportion to it..

If it weren’t for Ye Lian, Ling Mo would have another choice available to him – withdrawing to the countryside or mountains to hide. But if he did that, Ye Lian would starve to death.

Both Ling Mo and Ye Lian would only be able to continuously evolve if they stayed in this city filled with zombies.

But before proceeding to the city, it was necessary to ensure that sufficient preparations were made. Ling Mo had to find: a means of transport, enough food to last the journey and a suitable weapon…

Ling Mo had both a means of transport and food. For transport, he had long since found a bicycle to use. But the issue of finding weapons was causing him some trouble.

Normal household knives wouldn’t last long before getting chipped or wearing out. They were far from his ideal choice. An appropriate weapon was mandatory.

“That’s right, didn’t Wang Lin’s family make knives…?”

Wang Lin was a girl who lived in the same building as Ling Mo and had a pretty face. Ling Mo was always tempted to sneak another look at her during the few times they passed each other by. Though after the virus outbreak, he had yet to see her again. Ling Mo felt a sour taste in his mouth when he thought of this. Even if such a frail girl didn’t turn into a zombie, she’d have a hard time ahead of her as a survivor.

In the morning, Ling Mo carried his bag filled with supplies and walked along with Ye Lian towards the direction of Wang Lin’s knife shop.

Ling Mo purposely chose a route that was relatively safer, but he still killed dozens of zombies along the way before he finally reached a thoroughly deserted shop.

The shop’s windows were stained with blood and broken glass from the front door was scattered  on the floor. The pitch black interior of the shop was enough to make a person tremble in fear. However such a scene was completely normal in this post apocalyptic world.

Naturally, Ye Lian was the first to go in. Although she would attack them, regular zombies wouldn’t take the initiative to attack her first.

Strangely, there were no zombies in the shop, allowing Ye Lian and Ling Mo to walk in unobstructed.

There were many knives in the shop, but these were meant for collecting and their blade edges weren’t sharpened. But Ling Mo had previously came on behalf of a friend to make a purchase, so he knew that this shop actually had edged knives. The only problem was they weren’t put up on display for sale.

“If i remember correctly, the workshop should be at the back…”

Ling Mo went around to the back of the counter and found a reinforced door. After gripping the door handle and giving it a twist, he found that something was amiss.

Logically speaking, this type of door would open once pulled; but when Ling Mo twisted the knob he realized that it was locked.

Could someone be hiding in the workshop? If that’s the case, there might even be a survivor inside! Wang Lin may have survived and was hiding inside!

Ling Mo felt excited once he thought of this and gently knocked on the door, and shouted out in a low voice, “ Is anyone inside?”

Bang!

After a moment of silence, a muffled sound suddenly came from behind the door. It sounded like something was being knocked over.

“There really is someone!”

Breaking out from his surprise, Ling Mo gave the door a few hard knocks again. However only banging sounds could be heard in return. It looked like whoever was inside had no intention of opening the door.

Could the person inside be crippled from hunger? But there were definitely sounds of movement coming from inside. Ling Mo had an uneasy feeling about this. But regardless, Ling Mo still needed to obtain a weapon, so he had to open the door.

Gathering his strength, Ling Mo gave the door a kick. However, he wasn’t able to break open the door even after exerting all his strength. But with Ye Lian’s help, the problem was easily solved.

With a muffled bang, a small gap formed as the door was forced open. Suddenly, a hand reached out from within before Ling Mo had the chance to fully open the door.

Ling Mo’s pupils shrunk a bit when he saw the hand. At first glance, it seemed like a normal hand. However on closer inspection a trace of redness could be seen on its fingernails, which looked the same as Ye Lian’s! Oblivious to Ling Mo’s thoughts, the hand tightly gripped the edge of the iron door as it let out crunching sounds.

Was there really another mutated zombie inside?!

Although he had long since expected such things might happen, but actually seeing a mutated zombie apart from Ye Lian caught him completely off guard.

Based on its shape, the hand looked like it belonged to a man. This probably meant that Wang Lin had met an unfortunate end…

Ling Mo felt a surge of anger at the thought of Wang Lin likely being killed by the owner of this hand. He flourished the knife in his hand and slashed downwards at the outstretched hand. Fresh blood splurted out as half a hand landed on the floor. At the same time, the reinforced door had also been broken down from the force of the slash.

What appeared behind the fallen door was a grisly scene.

The entire area of the small workshop, be it the walls or floorboards, was filled with blood stains, torn cloth and human skeletons. Among the skeletons were two corpses that lay face flat on the ground, exposing the empty holes at the back of their heads.

The only one left alive was a male youth who had been knocked on the ground by the door. As soon as he landed, he jumped up with the speed of lightning and turned into a black shadow before he charged straight at Ling Mo.

The was Ling Mo’s first time facing a mutated zombie’s attack. Its attacks were blindingly fast, to the point where regular people wouldn’t be able to react. If this were the past Ling Mo he might have already been knocked down and died a dog’s death. But after improving his abilities, Ling Mo was exceptionally calm as he observed the mutated zombie charging over.

Although the mutated zombie was quick, Ling Mo’s reaction speed didn’t lose out either. Ling Mo had started moving around the same time it began its attack.

Ling Mo moved back slightly by half a step and leaned his body to the side. He then gripped the knife in his hand and forcibly swung in the direction of the zombie.

Splash!

A fountain of blood erupted when the two of them crossed paths. Ling Mo turned ninety degrees and cut open the zombie’s stomach with his knife. He then raised his knife up and forcefully brought his knife down on the zombie.

If it were a regular zombie, it would have fallen under Ling Mo’s relentless attacks. But this zombie was indeed different. The moment Ling Mo turned, the zombie lowered its body and turned to face him. It dodged his downwards chop and rushed at him with its hand stretched towards his head.

If he was caught by the zombie, the wounds he suffered would definitely not be light. And at this point, Ye Lian wouldn’t be able to help him either.

“You’re courting death!”

At the precipice of life and death, the berserk power within Ling Mo’s body was drawn out. Ling Mo chose not to dodge and stood his ground. He flicked his wrist and chopped down at the zombie again. At the same time, he jerked his knee up and smashed it against the zombie’s chin, making it stagger for a brief moment.

In battle, even a brief opening would lead to fatal consequences. It was in this brief moment that Ling Mo’s knife slashed towards the zombie’s nape.

Crack!

A soft sound drifted out and the mutated zombie was temporarily stunned. Seeing this, Ling Mo clenched his teeth and gave the knife a sharp twist.

Snap!

Following this crisp sound, knife’s blade broke off from its handle and remained within the zombie, completely extinguishing its life.

Holding onto the other half of his broken knife, Ling Mo felt like his entire body had been drained of energy. He couldn’t help but take large gasps of air.
