You wondered right! Honestly that’s what makes Chinese so confusing. Originally was using an ordinary household knife up to the point where he found the mutated zombie in chapter 7. After that he found a saber, which incidentally is ALSO written as knife in Chinese.
I was also under the impression that he was using some variant of a knife because, honestly speaking, what are the chances of a shop in a non-fantasy setting selling full on swords/sabers with a killing edge?
On a related note, Shana uses a long saber.

Well she is on a diet of solely little gel thingies… Which seem to be really energy dense, so maybe they are acting as a more efficient version of fat? Outside of in universe justifications though, it’s definitely just the author’s preference.
Wait, cousin? I don’t ever remember her or her cousin(I know she has a relative but I forgot the relationship) being mentioned as being assassins. Also @Sigil, from what I remember she’s at most 3 years older than the MC.

I think you can view it as more of a “booster shot”, with said shot being filled with a concentrated dose of the virus instead.
