Chapter 9: An Encounter With Survivors

As Ling Mo led Ye Lian towards the main city, he found that Ye Lian not only showed changes in her self-awareness, but there were also great changes to her instincts.

In the face of regular zombies, Ye Lian’s attitude was as if she were looking at inferior beings and her methods of killing were even cleaner than they were previously. It seemed that in her eyes,  she was merely stepping on bugs. Her attack speed had seen an increase as well. If her agility was likened to that of a cheetah before, then she’d be like a humanoid cheetah now.

After the virus’ evolution, although her physical appearance had become closer to that of a normal human’s, but her behaviour was becoming increasingly closer to that of a beast’s. This was especially so when she was hunting beings that were weaker than her. To Ye Lian, regular zombies were most likely such beings.

Ling Mo couldn’t help but wonder what kind of reaction she’d have when she saw a normal human. But under his control, stopping her from randomly lashing out was very much possible.

Ling Mo rode his bicycle with Ye Lian through the streets. If it wasn’t for the zombies all around them, such a scene would have been rather enjoyable for him.

However, good things don’t last forever. Not long after reaching the city, Ling Mo found that trouble had come knocking.

To be specific, he came across two survivors who were currently being surrounded by a group of zombies.

This pair of survivors who was made of a male and a female didn’t look too old. Based on the bags slung from their backs it was easy to see that they had come out in search of food. They were even fighting outside the entrance of a supermarket. Using the supermarket’s door as cover, the pair was putting up a forceful resistance against the zombie’s relentless assault. However the continuous increase in the number of surrounding zombies had placed them in repeated danger.

These zombies moved rapidly and their attacks were strong. It didn’t take long before the supermarket’s door was smashed to pieces. The pair was forced to retreat inside as they used the shelves, counters and whatever else was available to slow down the zombies.

Looking on from a distance, Ling Mo who was planning to take a detour by leaving the area was suddenly attracted to the sight of the girl.

The girl was holding a long saber 1 and wore a smile on her face the whole time. Whenever a dangerous situation arose, she would burst out with an explosive speed and resolve the issue, taking care of all the zombies that rushed forward. The burst of explosive speed that she displayed was even comparable to Ye Lian’s. If he didn’t see it for himself, he’d never believe that a regular human who was as talented as this girl existed.

Most importantly, she was smiling. A normal girl would go pale with fright and tremble all over even if she wasn’t scared stiff. But this girl on the other hand looked like she enjoyed fighting, even when placed in a disadvantageous situation. However things weren’t looking good for her. Even if she were stronger, faced with the ever increasing numbers of zombies, her stamina would eventually be depleted. Even Ling Mo could see that her method of attacking in an instant placed a huge physical and mental burden on her body.

Even so, she still seemed so calm…

Ling Mo found this incredibly suspicious. He even suspected that she might be like him and have special power at her disposal.

Once he thought of this, Ling Mo became very curious about the girl. But after looking at Ye Lian behind him, he decided not to stick his nose into other people’s business. It’d be alright if the other party was just a regular survivor, but if she really had a special ability, she might be able to discern Ye Lian’s real identity. If that happened things would be troublesome…

As he was about to leave on his bicycle, he heard a voice calling out at him from the supermarket, “Brother! Help us out!”

Upon hearing that, Ling Mo’s head started to ache.

Putting aside the fact that the voice calling him brother made him feel rather depressed, the sound of shouting had caused an even bigger problem! A zombie’s sense of hearing was much better than a regular human’s. After he shouted, a number of zombies immediately came over from nearby alleys or shops. Even worse, the moment they appeared they noticed Ling Mo and Ye Lian, immediately rushing towards them.

“What an asshole!” Ling Mo silently cursed as he pulled out the short saber by his waist and jumped off his bicycle. Ling Mo still had his misgivings about the girl’s identity, so he could only make Ye Lian take the role of a spectator in this fight.

But this was his first time taking on dozens of zombies on his own. His strength alone would probably be insufficient.

Thankfully, he still had his ability to control zombies, and this was the perfect time to verify his findings. As he raised his saber at the foremost zombie, his gaze was already directed towards the second zombie. During the brief moment that their eyes met, his domineering spiritual power had already forcefully taken control of the zombie.

As a result, the moment he killed the first zombie, the second zombie jumped towards the edge of his blade, seemingly offering itself up to him.

This was just the beginning. A number of zombies were already rushing towards him. Ling Mo kicked away the zombie’s corpse as he felt a chill run down his spine, but he felt an unprecedented clarity of mind.

He’d already experimented controlling two zombies at once, so how about three?

Controlling three zombies at once was a brand new challenge for Ling Mo, but during this critical moment he had no time to think. He allowed this thought to surface in his mind before putting it into practice without the slightest bit of hesitation.

Ling Mo’s saber sliced across a zombie at the front of the pack. At the same time, he controlled the two zombies who were following close behind. Ling Mo’s saber swiftly cut open their throats in the brief moment they were frozen. Controlling so many zombies at once meant that he was only able to affect their movement for a very short period of time. However Ling Mo didn’t expected it to be so effective in battle.

Fighting in accordance to this battle style that he’d come up with, Ling Mo appeared relaxed as he dispatched dozens of zombies at an unbelievable speed. In the blink of an eye, Ling Mo’s surroundings were filled with the corpses of zombies.

Ling Mo whose entire body was covered in blood looked like a god of death. When the two who were in the supermarket saw this, they were struck dumb.

The boy continued to stare blankly before he unconsciously shouted out, “Holy shit! Shana, did you see that? What’s he doing, he’s so vicious!” However unbeknownst to him, a zombie had squeezed through the crack of a counter and was reaching towards him.

“Squelch!”

A cold glint flashed in front of his eyes as a hand fell at his feet. A cold sweat ran down his face as he turned to look at the girl who was right beside him.

Shana coldly casted a sidelong glance at him as she easily thrusted her long saber into the belly of the zombie, before forcefully pulling it out and saying, “How’s that my business?”

Realizing that the situation had taken a turn for the better, the boy was overjoyed as he said, “We’re saved! Quick, let’s escape from the encirclement!” Towards this, Shana had a rather indifferent look on her face.

Regardless of whether Ling Mo had willingly saved them, the boy immediately rushed out from within the counter while Shana gave a frown before quickly escaping as well.

As he looked at the figures of the two people coming towards him from the distance, Ling Mo knew he wouldn’t be able to shake them off for the time being. Rather than have them bring over a group of zombies to him, why not rescue them instead?

  1. Tks for the chapter!

If her agility was likened to that of a cheetah before, then she’d be like a humanoid cheetah by now.

Ling Mo kicked away the zombie’s corpse as he felt a chill run down his spine/back, as he also felt an unprecedented clarity of mind.
