Chapter 4: The Strength Of Puppets

All of a sudden, Ye Lian’s eyes emitted a chilling aura and Ling Mo’s head started to throb as Ye Lian struggled to break free from his control. Luckily, Ling Mo managed to recover in time and regain control over Ye Lian.

The thought of Ye Lian almost breaking free from his control at the slightest distraction made Ling Mo fearful.

In combat, normal Corpse Puppets were no match for Ye Lian. However her impressive capabilities also meant that Ling Mo had a hard time controlling her. Trying to avoid being killed by her while at the same time not injuring her made it even more difficult. Having found Ye Lian meant that it was even more important for him to survive. He had to find a way to cure her.

Knowing that he couldn’t stay here for long, Ling Mo hurriedly controlled Ye lian and headed towards his hideout.

In such a dense area, one would end up bumping into a zombie no matter how careful they were. But unlike the tough battles that Ling Mo experienced earlier, with Ye Lian by his side, none of the zombies were able to put up any resistance.

Ye Lian outclassed regular zombies in both speed and power. Ling Mo was originally unwilling to send Ye Lian into battle as he was worried about her being injured. But once the zombies appeared, a violent urge to do battle exploded from within her that affected Ling Mo as well. The violent emotions he felt when he controlled Corpse Puppet earlier was magnified tenfold with Ye Lian.

Ling Mo felt that he had lost half of his control over Ye Lian when she rushed into battle. Her battle power skyrocketed as she fought. With Ling Mo’s current level of control, he managed to barely maintain his connection with her while she was in such a state.

“Who’d have thought that she’d be so strong…” As Ling Mo thought of this he felt a sense of danger. At this rate, Ye Lian would break free from his control if he didn’t increase his strength. When such a time came, let alone curing her, he might even die by her hands. Even if he managed to escape by luck, finding her again in a city this big would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Ling Mo clenched his teeth at the thought of this. Steeling his resolve, he gripped his chopping knife and jumped into battle alongside Ye Lian.

Currently four zombies surrounded Ye Lian as she tore off one of their heads. These zombies wouldn’t instinctively attack Ye Lian, but once Ling Mo appeared the remaining three threw themselves at him.

Ling Mo felt very anxious as this was his first time taking on so many zombies. However, somehow the violent emotions that flowed out from Ye Lian gave him the courage to fight. At the same time, he himself experienced a desire to do battle.

After letting out a growl, Ling Mo rushed towards the zombie in the middle of the three.

Zombies were strong and their movements weren’t as rigid as those in the movies, but as monsters that moved according to instinct, their attack patterns were simple.

Ling Mo dodged to the side as a zombie tried to grab him. While dodging, he sent his chopping knife towards the zombie’s stomach.

“Squelch!”

The sound of the knife’s tip entering flesh could be heard, but Ling Mo didn’t have time to think about it. He raised his leg and kicked the third zombie.

The zombie was kicked towards Ye Lian who, without giving it time to stand up, pierced the back of its head.

Ling Mo had yet to recover his stance when the zombie he dodged stood up once again, landing him in a dangerous situation.

The zombie stretched its bloodstained hand towards Ling Mo who had his knife stuck in the other zombie. Once that zombie caught him, the chances of escaping would be non-existent.

Ling Mo didn’t panic even when faced with the prospect of dying. He grabbed the handle of his chopping knife and charged forward, dragging the zombie that had its stomach pierced along with it.

When the two zombies crashed into each other, Ling Mo’s chopping knife had already sliced open one of the zombie’s stomachs and without any hesitation, he plunged his knife into the back of the other zombie’s head with a hard twist.

Mere moments had passed since the battle had started. Now, when Ling Mo awoke from his frenzy he realized that the battlefield was littered with the corpses of zombies.

Ling Mo realized that in the previous battle he had gotten stronger and faster while still being able to maintain a calm state of mind. Though this may have been due to his physical and mental abilities improving, but that violent feeling he experienced must have affected him as well.

Most importantly, looking at the dead zombies around him and his bloodstained chopping knife, Ling Mo’s body couldn’t help but tremble slightly. This wasn’t from fear, but rather excitement.

By this time Ye Lian had already pierced the backs of the other zombies’ heads and eaten the gel within them. After eating them her eyes grew brighter and seemed to contain some intelligence within them. If it weren’t for their chilling redness, she looked no different from other survivors.

For reasons unknown, Ye Lian had undergone some changes which Ling Mo had also felt within his own body as well.

Although it was faint sensation, Ling Mo did indeed feel himself getting much stronger. He had also recovered some of the stamina that he used in the previous battle. More importantly, the spiritual connection between Ye Lian and himself had grown stronger.

Could their connection have lead to Ling Mo getting stronger as well when Ye Lian mutated? Ling Mo couldn’t think of any better reason.

Before this, Ling Mo had no way of determining if these changes were good or bad. But now, Ling Mo felt excited after experiencing the sensation of growing stronger.

It didn’t affect his sense of reason and even strengthened his connection with Ye Lian! Ling Mo almost started to look forward to these changes. But in his heart he knew that no good would come from being hasty. If his recklessness brought harm to Ye Lian then it’d be too late for regrets.

Ling Mo dropped by a clothes store on the way back to his hideout and found a clean dress along with a pair of sandals for Ye Lian to change out of her bloodstained clothes.

He could disregard the appearance of his Corpse Puppets, but his beloved Ye Lian had to be clean. Even if she turned into a zombie, there’s no way he’d let her look like this.

But when he returned to his hideout, Ling Mo realized he had no idea how to get Ye Lian who was quietly sitting in front of him to change.

Neither controlling her to change nor helping her himself allowed him to avoid looking at Ye Lian’s body that he’d fantasized about numerous times…

In the past Ling Mo felt he wasn’t good enough for her, so he couldn’t bring himself to confess in spite of his love for her; let alone think about how their relationship would change after he did.

After all, he was just a bitter nerd with a low income. Ye Lian on the other hand was the belle of X city’s university and there were many pursuers who were more worthy than him by her side.

But now for the sake of helping her change her clothes, he had no choice but to look at her body…

Ling Mo felt his mouth turn dry even though he knew Ye Lian wasn’t aware of what was  happening.

Ling Mo looked at the basin by his feet and then at Ye Lian whose body was filled with dirt. He hesitated for awhile before finally slowly reaching out his hand…

“Stay calm, stay calm…”

Facing his beloved, it’d be a lie if he said that he had no urges. But looking at Ye Lian’s emotionless eyes, Ling Mo felt a stab of pain in his heart.

When would he finally be able to finally turn her back to normal…
